When it is working properly the DPF system is self-cleaning because, at a pre-determined level, the engine’s ECU triggers a regeneration (cleaning) process to clean the trapped soot through burning, by increasing exhaust temperatures. When the DPF is blocked or shows signs of a blockage, then there is a problem in the system. It could be this is due to an issue with the engine and it is producing excessive soot, blocking the DPF, or the regeneration cycle, has not occurred due to an underlying issue. There could also be a problem with one of the sensors monitoring the DPF and its associated components, which could falsely indicate a blockage.
